What do German cockroaches look like and where do you see them? Usually found in the kitchen area, this pest is small, 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch in length, and moderate yellowish-brown. German roaches can be distinguished from other roaches by two dark parallel stripes on the anterior, dorsal portion of the thorax. If it isn’t the size of your thumb and it is reddish brown to black, it is a female wood roach. If it is dark mahogany and the size of your thumb, then it is a smoky brown roach. If it is larger (up to 1.5 inches), has wings, and is reddish-brown using a lighter edge over the head, then it is an American roach.
The German cockroach is a cosmopolitan species, meaning, they are widely spread to other countries, especially those with tropical climates. The mature female German roach can lay 35 to 45 Egg cases or known as ootheca, which also encapsulates multiple eggs. These eggs hatch in approximately 1 month and the nymphs flourish to survive and develop into adults between 6 weeks to 6 months. German roaches can multiply fast, normally 3 to 4 generations per year. German cockroaches are nocturnal pests, meaning they are busy nighttime creepy crawlers. They can thrive both indoors and outside and prefers wet, humid areas such as kitchens and bathrooms in homes and commercial properties.
Adults are half an inch long, light to medium brown with two dark, identifying stripes behind the head. The young are wingless, smaller and much darker in color, with a light stripe in their backs. German cockroaches will eat anything. They stay close to food and water source. Females reproduce one egg capsule every 3-4 weeks. Each capsule contains 25-45 eggs. Infestations are often found in kitchens, bathrooms, but can inhabit other areas if there’s a heavy population or you have run them into each other with the repellent effect of insecticides.
Out of that capsule can come up to 36-48 eggs. That means just 1 roach can spawn 384 more roaches. As you can see, you can have quite a pest problem in only a brief time with German roaches. That’s why it’s important to remove roach eggs once you treat for cockroaches. Simply eliminating the live roaches won’t resolve the problem.
